The Reverend Peter W. Marty is the host of Grace Matters, the radio ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In addition to being host of Grace Matters, Peter is senior pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a 3000-member congregation in Davenport, Iowa. Prior to his arrival in Davenport in 1996, he served an eight-year pastorate in Kansas City, Missouri and a two-year pastorate in River Forest, Illinois. Peter began his broadcast ministry as host of Grace Matters radio in February 2005.

Pastor Marty graduated from both The Colorado College and Yale Divinity School with honors. He was the 1979 recipient of an honors fellowship in history for study at Oxford University. Prior to studies at Yale, Marty lived in Cameroon, West Africa for one and a half years, serving as the director of building for a mission outpost of the Lutheran Church.

Marty has served on a number of hospital, college, foundation, and community boards. Presently he is on the board of trustees for Augustana College, Rock Island, IL., and chairs the board of The Christian Century magazine. He preaches and speaks around the country and regularly publishes articles on leadership, preaching, and parish renewal in America. He has been a frequent workshop leader on congregational life and pastoral leadership. Other writings include contributions to several multi-volume works on lectionary preaching, a chapter in a book on Practical Theology, and a forthcoming book from Augsburg Fortress: The Anatomy of Grace (Autumn 2008). Marty is a one-time fellow of the Fund for Theological Education, and has served as a consultant on pastoral leadership for the Fund. He has been a Pastor’s Working Group member with the Louisville Institute, and a participant in a Duke Project for the Study of Ministry.

In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Peter W. Marty has committed energies to a range of assignments including ecumenical ministries teams, candidacy committee advisor, a Lutheran-Episcopal seminar leader, chair of the Senior Pastors’ Conference, and twice as a Colleague Program Leader mentoring new pastors. Presently at St. Paul, he leads a pastoral residency program funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. This program, designed for fostering pastoral excellence, is one of two in the country situated in a Lutheran Church setting.

He is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from St. Ambrose University (Doctor of Humanities).

Peter is married to Susan and they have two children, Jacob and Rachel. He enjoys family travel, woodworking, tennis, French horn, reading, and the adventure of waking up to a new day every day.
