Prabhakar, is a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Rochelle, Ill., and
is on the Northern Illinois Synod's Multicultural Committee, which is
involved with anti-racism training among the synod's 150 congregations.
Prabhakar is one of 13 people in her synod who
are trained to help members of ELCA congregations understand racism in
the 21st century. "Racism now is much more subtle than it was in the
1960s," says Prabhakar. She says that simple things that most people
take for granted can be a barrier to someone's full participation in
society and in the church.
The training helps people identify these
barriers and provides ways to deal with it. "Racism is a sin just like
any other sin, and God gives us power to work on that and look at it
from a Christian point of view," she says.
Prabhakar is not only enthusiastic about the
ELCA’s anti-racism ministry, she encourages others to get involved by
becoming facilitators. She says, "The blessings I've received by being
involved with the church and giving my time for volunteer work are
wonderful and I meet some fantastic people!" |
